The Herkimer Diamond . What a name for such a beautiful and delightfully sparkly stone. The fact is that it's named Herkimer because it is found only in the area of Herkimer County, New York. It's called a 'diamond' because of its ample facetry which creates the 'fire' associated with a diamond. Legend has it that the people who came into the new American land to farm saw the little stones sparkling there in the fields. That could be true, as some of these crystals inadvertently end up in the fields right along with other stones in the dirt there, but most are hidden in rock or other igneous and mineral matrices and must be 'mined'.
None of that really matters, though, as it doesn't change the energy of the crystals. Most of these crystals end up with 18 facets, but I've seen some with as many as 24. I've been told of some that have as many as 28. Generally, the Herkimer Diamond is double terminated with 12 terminal facets, 6 to each termination and 6 central facets. The added facets appear as 'windows' or additional faces. No matter what, they are delightful energy and encourage a light and fun spirit, making the sometimes all too serious business of spiritual evolving a more playful experience.
